The Twenty Minute Body/Mind Routine

The Routine is a daily exercise in self-care taking only twenty minutes of time integrating gentle movement from Tai Chi, Qigong, Trager® and Yoga, self-applied massage, restorative breathing, and meditation. It is designed to provide the essential movement necessary to maintain a  healthy muscular/skeletal system, to increase your life force or energy so that you may meet the demands of a busy life  and to provide the focus and relaxation to accomplish these goals. It consists of three parts.

In part one, you warm-up or prepare for energy. You begin taking the body through the basic four movements of  flexion, extension, side bending and rotation while loosening all the major knots of tension. You provide complete integrated movement of the entire muscular/skeletal system.

Part two is the core of the Routine- Qigong and Tai Chi. By practicing these simple exercises , you  balance  your energy, increase your mobility and establish dynamic posture. Through naturally coordinated, full breathing and mindful movement:

    • strength and flexibility are increased without strain.

    • the vascular system is allowed to relax permitting maximum circulation of nutrition and oxygen.

    • the harmful effects of stress are revered and the body's natural direction toward self-healing is restored.

    • you become more present uncovering a deeper connection between your personal nature and the larger nature that surrounds and supports all of us.

In the last part of the Routine you sit and apply self-massage which further frees the energy. The Routine concludes with an ancient Taoist  meditation called the Inner Smile. By practicing this meditation of loving-kindness towards yourself and others, you deepen your self-healing and your sense of well-being.

Most importantly, the manner in which all of this is accomplished makes this routine available and beneficial to most everyone. With some adaptations it can even be practiced by those unable to stand.
    
 The  Routine can be learned in a scheduled 4 or 6 week class or can be learned using the DVD.  The routine is  presented in a sequential manner allowing for easier remembrance. Once mastered you are encouraged to become more and more creative in how you approach the routine. The beauty of the routine is that it can be done in 20 minutes in its entirety or any of the three parts can be done separately and any individual movement can be done as needed.

 

The Twenty Minute Body/Mind DVD

A 74 minute color DVD of the routine is available.  The DVD includes the Twenty Minute Routine done to music followed by detailed instruction and ending with additional advanced exercises to further deepen the routine as you advance.
